May 30th: The Mission of Parables: Recovering the Heart and Context Jesus'
Stories - Kyle Mills $30.00
One third of Jesus' words in the Synoptic Gospels are given by way of parables. Understanding the mission of these stories is fundamental to understanding the message of the great Rabbi from Nazareth. This lecture will serve as an introduction to the parables of Christ. It will explore parables in context of the first century Judaism in which Jesus delivered them. Special attention will be given to the main theological motifs advanced by Christ in the parables, with a short meditation on the 'Parable of the Parables', the Seeds and the Sower.
June 6th: Parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard: Who are the laborers and what
is the vineyard? - Deb Holiday $30.00
These are the questions that we will explore in this parable. The image of the vineyard is found in many Old Testament stories. Jesus uses this familiar reference to give us insight into the Kingdom of God.
June 13th: The Lost is Found: Parables on God's Love and Forgiveness -
Traci Dempsey $30.00
This session will examine these three parables: An Examination of the Lost Sheep (Mt 18:12-14; Lk 15:4-7); The Lost Coin (Lk 15:8-10); The Prodigal Son (Lk 15:11-32).
June 20th: Return of the King: Jesus' Parables of the Kingdom -
Scott Powell $30.00
Jesus' kingdom parables are some of the most recognizable parts of the Gospels. Despite their familiarity, there is more to these parables than meets the eye. To understand Jesus' parables of the kingdom, we must first understand what sort of kingdom Jesus is building. This talk will explore how Jesus' original audiences would have understood his words and what they have to say to us today.
June 27th: The Good Samaritan vs. The Unforgiving Servant: A Dichotomy to
Fulfilling the Greatest Commandment - Derek Barr $30.00
In this talk, we will explore the parables of the Good Samaritan and the Unforgiving Servant which contain two men who have dramatically different worldviews. Jesus, as a loving and complete teacher, leads us in how to love as God loves. These parables of Jesus are essential to His message of loving one another as He loved us; a sacrificial, self-giving love. Is this kind of love even still possible or relevant in today's society? Is it possible to love as God loves? Can the way we treat others influence our eternal salvation? Come and see.
